19th century. 35 3/4" forged iron blade with sharply upturned point. The back decorated in deeply chiseled bands, herringbone and hound's tooth, with stylized foliage splay terminal. The base with separate scroll terminal guard of rudimentary form. Wood grip turned with alternate broad and narrow beads. Bronze simulated wire work base and terminal mounts. Concentric motif bronze pommel. Grip, shows minor chips with good patina from handling. The blade quite smooth with numerous pockmark speckles from the forging process as made. Decoration crisp.
