In excavated condition, with sharply tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section, hilt comprising tapering quillons of hexagonal section swelling at the forte and with downbent bluntly-pointed tips, flat tapering tang, and thick deeply chamfered wheel pommel drawn-up at the top to form a button 74 cm. blade, 96.3 cm. overall Sold for £7,750 inc. premium Literature: Hoffmeyer, cat. no. 61, pp. 55, 86 and 87, figs. 10 and 22 The pommel conforms to Oakeshott's Type I Provenance: Acquired from Robert-Jean Charles in Paris, June 1957 Similar examples were in the collections of Sir E. Barry, Baron de Cosson and William Randolph Hearst. Other examples are preserved in The Musee de l'Armee, Paris and the Rouen Museum.
