The Alexiad by Anna Comnena (Daughter of Byzantine Emperor Alexios) is a unique and invaluable chronicle of Byzantium's wars with the Normans, the Byzantine perspective of the First Crusade and moreover the reign of Emperor Alexios (1081-1118). An interesting quirk of Byzantine culture is evident through the (1081-1118); that being that Byzantine victories, like Ancient Roman victories were so commonplace that victories often don't rate a mention in the histories, whereas defeats are dwelt upon substantially.
